(Special Kids Parents Support Group)
This is a peer support group for parents, carers and family members that have a child with special needs. The group was set up in 2007 by Kate Ahern and Julie White who identified a lack of support for parents and set up a group in the area.
The group is now self-sustaining and meets on the last Thursday of every month in the Family Resource Centre from 7.30 – 9.30pm. It is a time out period for parents to have a cup of tea and a chat in a relaxing environment, the group have also enjoyed pampering, meditation and self-care sessions.
The group is a safe space where you will not be judged. The get together is also an ideal opportunity for the sharing of ideas and getting practical help with issues. If you have a problem it is very likely that someone else has had a similar experience at some time.
In this informal environment huge amounts of valuable information, contacts and learning are exchanged so that parents access support for themselves and their children.
