(Special Kids Parents Support Group)
In 2007 Kate Ahern and Julie White identified a lack of support for parents, carers and family members that have a child with special needs. As a solution, they set up a peer support group in the area.
The group is now self-sustaining. SKiPS meets on the last Thursday of every month in the Family Resource Centre from 7.30 – 9.30pm. It is a time out period for parents to have a cup of tea and a chat in a relaxing environment. The group have also enjoyed pampering, meditation and self-care sessions.
The group is a safe space where you will not be judged. The get together is also an ideal opportunity for the sharing of ideas and getting practical help with issues. If you have a problem it is very likely that someone else has had a similar experience at some time.
In this informal environment huge amounts of valuable information, contacts and learning are exchanged so that parents access support for themselves and their children.
